Earthquake in Japan, Taiwan Live Updates: PM Modi extends condolences to Taiwan quake victims
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's east
coast on Wednesday, causing widespread devastation and claiming at least four
lives. The earthquake, which occurred at 1:41 p.m. local time, also injured
over 50 people and left several buildings damaged.
According to reports, the earthquake was felt in Shanghai
and several provinces along China’s southeastern coast, as well as in southern
Japan. Taiwan, situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is prone to
seismic activity due to its location on the convergence of several tectonic plates.
In response to the disaster, Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the victims of the earthquake in
Taiwan and offered assistance to the affected areas. The Taiwanese government
has mobilized rescue teams to search for survivors trapped under the rubble of
collapsed buildings.
Among the casualties were three individuals who were part
of a group of seven on an early-morning hike through the hills surrounding the
city. They were tragically crushed to death by boulders dislodged by the earthquake.
The city of Hualien, located near the epicenter of the
earthquake, bore the brunt of the disaster, with at least 26 buildings
collapsing in the area. Rescue efforts are currently underway to extricate
approximately 20 individuals who remain trapped under the debris.
The earthquake has disrupted transportation services in
the region, with train and flight services suspended until further notice.
Authorities have also issued tsunami warnings, although they have since been
lifted.
The Taiwanese government has urged residents to remain
vigilant and take precautions against aftershocks, which are common after a
major earthquake. The full extent of the damage caused by the earthquake is
still being assessed, and rescue operations are ongoing to ensure the safety of
those affected by the disaster.
